Entry#2: The action of Listening
Hello my fierce warriors, I am back again with some fun blogging. Today I want to talk about listening. Now I know that sounds odd, but what most people do not realize is that Americans are not very good listeners. I suck at listening as well. For Example, In a 20-minute conversation, I zoned out or stopped listening about 7 times. I did not expect this outcome because I actually think I am really listening to the person I am talking to. I try my best to be a good listener because I personally hate when people do not listen to me. I believe this is a real reflection of my listening skills overall. I seem to be listening to people while I have thousands of things on my mind at the time. I tend to think things through days at a time rather than day by day, which makes it hard to interact with others. The lack of proper listening in America, is what drives social media sites or blogs. People go to social media sites and post things because they feel like no one is listening to them or understanding them. The truth is we are not listening to them because if we were then there would be less suicides and bullying in the world. The lack of proper, efficient, and good listening skills in America, is what drives people to feel unwanted, ugly, and misunderstood. I am not saying these things to blame anyone or try and make anyone feel bad. We are just talking about this in my communications class and I thought I should shed some light on this issue. Strategies that can help improve my listening skills are: taking 3 minutes a day for silence or just quietness, listening to sounds around me, savoring sounds, use proper listening positions, use the acronym known as R.A.S.A ( Receive, Appreciate, Summarize, and Ask). I believe once this world gets better at listening rather than hearing, we can decrease some of the hurt in the world felt by teenagers that feel unheard and unwanted. Well that's it for today guys. Hope everyone has a great day! Stay Beautiful.
I am also able to relate to this, many times in class I tend to zone out completely even if I am staring right at the professor. I also appreciate how much you relate your argument about listening with some of your own personal experiences. And I see how more people should take the time to simply listen to what is around them without any sort of intrusion of music or stimuli, it can be very beneficial to some people that struggle to listen attentively.
ReplyDeleteI personally believe that we do have a problem with listening, but it has come down to actions speak louder than words. And even as you said, if people stopped worrying about themselves within this crazy world and listened for even 3 seconds, this world could be so different... I can't guarantee that it would be a better world, but it could be positively impacted.
ReplyDeleteI agree, but it honestly depends on who is talking. Most of the time if its one of my close friends I pay more attention to what they are saying. If its a teacher on the other hand, I zone out constantly no matter the subject.
ReplyDeleteMelody--Your blog is coming along pretty well so far. You have some good topics and ideas, but you need to slow down and develop further. Keep digging into analysis and content to create more significance for your reader. You are a bit brief and quick, which doesn't leave much for your reader to grab onto. Don't forget about your audience; you are not writing a personal blog. Finally, think about the visual appeal of your entries, including the text formatting (you have big blocks of text).
